The essential component of military/veteran support in this COVID-19 timeframe is to ensure military/veterans and their families/caregivers can link with a wide variety of accurate, personalized, local resources that draw on the deep reservoir of community support to include nonprofit, government and business connections. That is the work of VCC.

This has been a moving week as we witnessed the heartbreaking images of violence, and the outpouring of peaceful protests in cities across our country. Many of us are asking what can we do to help our community, our county and our nation come together to end racial injustice.
The opportunities we need to succeed, the belonging we need to feel must apply to all - and the failure to apply these principles for so long to so many of our neighbors of color is a reality we can no longer ignore and must address - together. We acknowledge it will take hard work, part of which will include listening and reflection. And we know that is something we are absolutely capable of doing. In our work connecting veterans/military with community members we see time and time again how understanding and a sense of community grow when people listen and seek to understand one another. As we move forward in this historic time, we commit to seeking out opportunities to listen to those that have experienced prejudice and injustice. It is in listening that we can learn, and it is in learning that we can bring about changes that will put an end to racial injustice in our great nation. The San Diego Nurses Association recently reached out to VCC to ask if we would help promote a need for masks for the nurses serving aboard the USNS Mercy. Their goal was to collect 160 masks. Not only was VCC able to collect and deliver the requested number of masks, we exceeded their request and delivered…drum roll please… 947! Now the nurses may leave their cabins (yet remain on the ship) to conduct non hospital related activities, which is something that they couldn’t do prior to receiving these masks.
This was made possible by the determined efforts of a dedicated group of sewing volunteers who donated their time, sewing skills, and materials. Many thanks to all our wonderful volunteers! |
